OS X has no defrag application, however, OS X has implemented two methods of dealing with IO performance: automatic file defragmentation and hotfile clustering. Automatic file defragmentation works like this: when you open a file in OS X, if it is under 20MB and fragmented, OS X will move it to a contiguous block of space on your hard disk. Hotfile clustering tracks frequently used files and moves them to faster portions of your hard disk. These two features reduce the amount of problems users could experience related to disk fragmentation and IO performance, but does not completely eliminate them.
